Should You Share Your Goals With Others?
We'll take a look at some research papers if you should share your goals or not.
While my family and I were walking at the mall last week, I suddenly remembered the goals that I shared with them last December 2022.
I wish I didn't share it.
It's like whenever I share my goals with someone, it gets jinxed.
I know you've felt this before.
Currently, I'm having some challenges reaching the goals that I've said to them. It's not that sharing your goal is a bad thing. It's also a good thing—only if shared with the right people.
But who are the right people?
We'll cover that later on.
But first, let's talk about that jinxed feeling.
Why You Shouldn't Share Your Goals
There's this research that concluded that people who share their goals publicly tend to achieve them less.
The short reason is this:
It's because they develop a feeling as if they achieved the goal already.
It's one of the result of:
Getting praise too early about your personality instead of the process or effort.
Some people may demotivate you because they're afraid of you changing or outshining them.
The Exception
Now, let's take a look at this research.
The researchers found that people who share their goals with someone who had high status than them or believed that they're way ahead of them, showed greater progress in achieving their goals.
The Verdict
Never share your goals especially if it's tied to your identity (like losing weight).
It's best to share your goals with someone who's way ahead of you.

Here's something that I found on Reddit while I was researching this. 😂
